How it works
- An SMS says your last bill wasn't 'updated' and power goes off tonight.
- The 'officer' asks for a ₹10 payment or a screen-sharing app.
- With screen access, they drain your bank account.
Red flags
- A 'power department' SMS from a mobile number
- A deadline of 'tonight'
- Requests to install AnyDesk or similar apps
Stay safe
- Check bills only in your provider's official app or website
- Get helpline numbers from your bill, not from the SMS
- Never install screen-sharing apps for a stranger
